Choosing Your Wedding Photographer – 8 Top Tips
Choosing Your Wedding Photographer – My Top 8 Tips!
Choosing your wedding photographer can be a daunting process but it doesn’t need to be. In this blog I will giving my top 10 tips for making this process as enjoyable as it should be! Being a Birmingham wedding photographer, I have learnt over the years what my clients find important and I’m excited to share this with you.
Tip 1 – Your Birmingham Wedding Photographer’s Style
One of the biggest factors when choosing your wedding photographer is style! Most of the time you as a couple will have a particular style you gravitate towards. Really have a good idea of what you want your Birmingham wedding photographer to capture. Are you looking for photojournalism, posed, fashion or traditional? Each style of wedding photography Birmingham has it’s own unique look and choosing your wedding photographer carefully will reflect that.
Personally I shoot a mixture of all these styles to really encompass the whole spectrum. I must admit I do love photojournalistic moments and put a lot of emphasis on those. My advice would be to spend some time really exploring your preferred style. Find local photographers who specialise in that particular Birmingham wedding photography style. Go and meet them as it’s just as important to get along with your wedding photographer as it is to love their style!
Tip 2 – Has Your Birmingham Wedding Photographer Got Experience?
A big part in choosing your wedding photographer comes down to experience. Wedding photography requires a lot of skill as the day is fast paced and lighting changes constantly. So many people I’ve spoken to over the years have opted to go with a friend who’s into photography to shoot their wedding. I personally think this is a huge mistake and one you will probably regret years down the line. As an experienced Birmingham wedding photographer I suggest you spend a little extra and work with a professional.
One of the key reasons is equipment, professionals invest tens of thousands of pounds to ensure they have the best gear. From my own experience I work in low light during most weddings and this is challenging. Unless you have the correct gear you will not be able to capture clean images. So in choosing your Birmingham wedding photographer really factor this in as you do not want to regret it!
Tip 3 – Choosing Your Wedding Photographer – Setup An Interview
As a Birmingham wedding photographer I’am a huge believer in meeting my clients. I will always offer to come to your home and show you some examples of my work. I believe you should see a complete wedding, not just the best images on a wedding photographers website. This is also a great time to ask your potential Birmingham wedding photographer all the questions you have.
Most importantly this is the time to find out if, you like the person who may be doing your wedding photography Birmingham. I believe you have to become friends with your photographer to get the best possible images. If you’re at ease around your photographer and get along with them, your images will reflect this. Also when choosing your wedding photographer if they don’t offer to meet you, this is a bad sign. Maybe consider meeting another as it’s very risky to just take a leap of faith.
Tip 4 – Is Your Birmingham Wedding Photographer Consistent?
When choosing your wedding photographer consistency is key. Always ask to see a full album as this will give you a true picture of their ability. Sometimes the select few wow shots are drastically differnt from the entire album. Wedding photography Birmingham for me is about quality not quantity. Don’t be fooled by a photographer that offers 700-800 images as the quality may not be there. Each image should be composed, meaningful and well thought out. Every time I click the shutter I make sure it’s a compelling image. For me as a Birmingham wedding photographer this is the key to great pictures. I would rather you loved all 400 or more images, than liked a few of your 800!
If a photographer isn’t happy to show you a full wedding I would be wary of this. It may be a little extra effort to create a gallery but well worth giving you piece of mind. Your potential Birmingham wedding photographer should be doing everything they can to accommodate your needs.
Tip 5 – Does Your Wedding Photographer Have a Back Up?
When choosing your wedding photographer this just might be one of the most important questions. Heaven forbid this actually happened you’d want to know your special day won’t be affected. Your Birmingham wedding photographer should have at least two back up options, should they fall ill or are unable to attend. Make sure to ask this question at your face to face meeting along with insurance they have in their business.
Why is it important that your photographer have a good back up? When you book someone to take your precious wedding photography Birmingham, you have an expectation. If that photographer is unable to attend that exception still needs to be met.
Tip 6 – Ask About Your Wedding Photographers Postproduction
A lot of people seem to think the main service you pay for, is the time the photographer is with you on the day. The real time and effort comes in postproduction. This is where your wedding photographer will really put his or her stamp on your images. When choosing your photographer make sure to ask about this process. Me personally I take around 3-5 days solid to create your finished photographs. I probably suffer a little with OCD in this department as I’am a stickler for detail.
Again make sure you take the time to really go over your favourite Birmingham wedding photographers portfolio to see what there attention to detail is like. There can be many corners cut in wedding photography Birmingham when it comes to postproduction. You deserve the best so be aware!
Tip 7 – When Choosing Your Wedding Photographer, Know Your Rights.
This is another very important question and one that you really must ask. Most wedding photographers including myself will retain full copyright on your images. This basically means we can use them for any promotional use we choose. Also quite a few wedding photographers will only let you post watermarked images. They can also keep all the digital negatives so you have to purchase prints. This will all be on top of the package price you have paid for your Birmingham wedding photography.
In my Birmingham wedding photography business I don’t do the latter as mentioned above. When I deliver your final images you can make your own prints if you so wish. However I would never really recommend trying to do your own prints or albums as they will never be as good unless your in the print business. Most of the best album suppliers will only deal with trade so spend a little extra and get the real deal. I always tell my clients if they get a USB of images, not to leave them locked up in a draw! Albums are tangible and great way to relive your special day!
Tip 8 – Has Your Photographer Offered You An Engagement Shoot?
This my final point but one that could really enhance your experience. In my own Birmingham wedding photography business I absolutely love to do engagement shoots. For most of you this is the first time you’ve looked into hiring a professional photographer. Do you know how to pose properly or are you confident in front of the camera? I love to help my clients with poses on an engagement shoot, to build their confidence and show them just how amazing they look! These sessions are invaluable and can truly prepare you for the big day. When choosing your photographer seriously consider adding one of these sessions.
I really encourage my clients to have an engagement session. A good Birmingham wedding photographer will usually ask if you’d like to do this at your venue. This is great for a few reasons, you find the best spots ahead of time and get to meet the vendors. A lot of the time the co-ordinator will know the secret locations at their venue and this information can be priceless!
Choosing Your Wedding Photographer – Go With Your Gut!
Once you have done all of the above and really taken your time on finding a perfect photographer, go with your gut! Your gut feeling normally serves you well, if you feel that you’ve done your due diligence and have a good feeling about someone… go for it! I really hope this article about Birmingham wedding photography helped you. If you think I’m the right choice for your special day, I’d absolutely love to hear from you.
